Academic medicine is rapidly evolving as new treatment are becoming available. Some of the most exciting advances are involving the signalling machinery in cells and how these signalling pathways can differ in patient subsets.
"It's amazing to see how much progress we are doing in a relatively short period of time," Dr. Porcu explains. "The idea that your own immune response, your own immune system, would be able to be turned on and respond efficiently, I think a lot of people were skeptical of that, including me. Instead, what we have observed is that these checkpoint inhibitors... are just incredibly effective, and I don't think many people expected to see these kind of results."
